An anti-fracking campaigner launched a crowdfunding campaign tonight for a legal challenge to any government approval of Cuadrilla’s plans for shale gas exploration in Lancashire.

Gayzer Frackman, from Lytham, told an event at a London chambers he expected the government would permit fracking near Blackpool.

The Communities and Local Government Secretary, Sajid Javid, will announce within days whether Cuadrilla should be allowed to frack at Roseacre Wood and Preston New Road.

The company appealed against Lancashire County Council’s decisions in June last year to refuse planning permission for both sites. The inspector at a six-week public inquiry in Blackpool has already submitted her recommendations to the government. The final decision by Mr Javid will be announced by 6 October 2016.

Two community groups, which took part in the appeal, have said their future action would depend on Mr Javid’s decision.

Lancashire fracking prospect causes stress, suspicion and fractured communities – new research

wp_20160224_160-2

“The prospect of fracking for shale gas in Lancashire has already had a profound effect on local people, according to new research.

A study by (Dr) Anna Szolucha, of the University of Bergan in Norway, found that even before exploration had begun residents living near proposed sites had experienced stress and anxiety.

Much of this was caused by what she described as “a profound sense of moral outrage” at the activities of the gas company, local authorities and the government.”

Exposure to Chemicals Released During Fracking May Harm Fertility

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals linked to altered hormone levels, ovarian development in mice

Susan_Nagel

Susan Nagel and her team released a study that is the first of its kind to link exposure to chemicals released during fracking to adverse reproductive and developmental outcomes in mice. Scientists believe that exposure to these chemicals also could pose a threat to human development.

The evidence of the negative impacts of fracking are still accumulating with new environmental, geological and medical reports being published every month.

Date announced for more powerful Oil and Gas Authority

Greg_ClarkThe Oil and Gas Authority will be established as an independent regulator by the UK Government, with new powers that mean it can act with greater speed and flexibility to drive investment, support jobs and further the UK’s competitive edge in the oil and gas industry to ensure the UK remains an attractive destination for investment.

The Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy made the announcement during a visit to Aberdeen where he met with oil and gas industry representatives, visited leading local business ROVOP and chaired a round table with local businesses at Aberdeen & Grampian Chambers of Commerce.

Business and Energy Secretary Greg Clark commented:

The oil and gas industry is crucial to our energy security, economy and our cross-government industrial strategy.

As one of the UK’s largest industrial sectors and having one of the most highly skilled workforces in the world, we are determined to continue to work together to secure its long-term success.

Creating the Oil and Gas Authority and giving it powers to drive greater collaboration and efficiency will help attract investment, support jobs and make sure UK oil and gas remains competitive for the future.

It gives the Oil and Gas Authority new powers including: access to operators meetings; data acquisition and retention; dispute resolution; and sanctions. It also enables the transfer of the Secretary of State’s existing regulatory powers in respect of oil and gas to the Oil and Gas Authority.

Andy Samuel, Oil and Gas Authority Chief Executive, said:

We are delighted to welcome Greg Clark for his first visit to Aberdeen today as Secretary of State, just weeks after being appointed.

Over the last year, we have worked closely with our colleagues in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and other government departments to put in place the legislative and regulatory foundations to support Oil and Gas Authority’s transition to an independent government company, including the passing of the Maximising Economic Recovery UK Strategy in March and the Energy Act just two months later.

Government Company status formalises our position as a strong and effective authority with a full suite of regulatory powers to have a positive, transformational effect. Like industry, we are bound by the obligations of the Maximising Economic Recovery UK Strategy, and will continue to deliver on our priorities to drive collaboration, influence and promote the remaining prospectivity of the UK Continental Shelf.

Notes to editors:

  • There are still a number of matters which must be concluded before the Oil and Gas Authority formally becomes a Government Company. Vesting is the phrase we use to describe the process.
  • This process consists of completing a number of final regulations and administrative issues
  • The Government has committed measures worth £2.3bn to ensure the UK Continental Shelf remains an attractive destination for investment.Full Report here:

Local people have first call on shale wealth fund, says government, as consultation opens

Once again the Government insults the residents of Lancashire, and the rest of the UK, by offering personal bribes to accept fracking.

By Drill or Drop on

People have 11 weeks to comment on government proposals for payments from a shale wealth fund in a consultation which opened today.

The consultation document said:

“Local communities should be the first to benefit from the shale wealth fund, and they should get to decide how a proportion of the funding is used”.
